Born in Exmouth, Devon, in 1943, after obtaining a degree in music at Oxford University, Davies worked in Cologne as Stockhausen's personal assistant. Since then, he has been active as a free-lance composer, inventor of new musical instruments and sound sculptures, performer, and musicologist specializing in electronic music and 20th century instruments. In 1967 he founded the electronic music studio at Goldsmiths' College, London University, which he directed until 1986, and where he was Consultant Researcher until 1991. During 1986-93 he was a part-time external consultant on electronic instruments to the music department of the Gemeentemuseum in the Hague. Since 1999 he has been a part-time Researcher in Sonic Art at the Centre for Electronic Arts, Middlesex University, London.
