The lineup of performances included a duo with Roscoe Mitchell and Pauline Oliveros, the Deep Listening Band with Stuart Dempster, David Gamper and Pauline Oliveros, video artist Benton-C Bainbridge and an afterparty with DJ Olive and DJ Oliveros.

In addition to these special performances, Deep Listening Institute honored Roscoe Mitchell with the 2009 Deep Listening Golden Ear award. Deep Listening Institute recognizes Mitchell’s astute contributions to the world of music. The Golden Ear award was established in 2007 by Deep Listening Institute founder Pauline Oliveros & artistic director Ione in order to recognize musicians who in their practice are great listeners. Roscoe Mitchell was be the third artist to be honored with this unique award.

Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian is about opening her own and others' sensibilities it the many facets of sound. Since the 1960's she has influenced American Music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. Many credit her with being the founder of present day meditative music. All of Oliveros' work emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills.

She has been celebrated worldwide. During the 1960's John Rockwell named her work Bye Bye Butterfly as one of the most significant of that decade. In the 70's she represented the U.S. at
the World's Fair in Osaka, Japan; during the 80's she was honored with a retrospective at the
John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.: the 1990's began with a
letter of distinction from the American Music Center presented at Lincoln Center in New York:
In 2000 the 50th anniversary of her work was celebrated with the commissioning and perform-
ance of her Lunar Opera:Deep Listening For_tunes. Oliveros work is available on numerous
recordings produced by companies internationally




Roscoe Mitchell
Composer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Educator

Mr. Mitchell's innovation as a solo performer, his role in the resurrection of long neglected woodwind instruments of extreme register, and his reassertion of the composer into what has traditionally been an improvisational form have placed him at the forefront of contemporary music for over forty years.

He is a founding member of the world renowned Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, and the Trio Space.

His teaching credits include the University of Illinois, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the California Institute of the Arts, the AACM School of Music, the Creative Music Studio, University of North Dakota – Fargo, New England Conservatory, The Darius Milhaud Chair at Mills College and numerous workshops and artists-in-residence positions throughout the world.




Deep Listening Band is an improvisational group which was founded in 1988 by Pauline Oliveros (accordion), David Gamper (keyboards), and Stuart Dempster (trombone, didjeridu). The group is a collaborative exploration of sound and of social interaction between musicians and others.

Recent collaborators have been Thomas Buckner (voice), Ellen Fullman (Long String Instrument), Joe Giardullo (saxophone), Fritz Hauser (percussion), Urs Leimgruber (saxophone), Julie Lyon Balliett (voice and invisible dancing), and Joe McPhee (saxophone). The Deep Listening Band actively tours, at times performing in unique environmental settings.




DJ Olive was raised in Boston, Nova Scotia, Trinidad, Rhode Island and Australia. he co-founded Lalalandia Entertainment Research Corporation. Lalalandia made many of the most memorable Brooklyn warehouse after- hours environments of the '90s.

He has performed with Luc Ferrari, Marc Ribot, Kim Gordon, Christian Fennesz, Otomo Yoshihide, Derek Bailey, Jim O'Rourke, Yuka Honda, Alan Vega, Khan & Walker, Thurston Moore, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Jah Wobble, Mike Watt, Dave Douglas, Uri Caine, Lee Ranaldo and many more, proving his talent as a musician using turntables. He has founded two record labels, Phonomena Audio Arts & Multiples, and The Agriculture. 2001.




Benton-C Bainbridge is a video artist using custom digital, analog and optical systems to make movies, installations and live visual performances.

Benton-C has exhibited on 5 continents in venues including SFMoMA (San Francisco), Hayden
Planetarium, Lincoln Center, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden (Washington, D.C.), Teatro Colón CETC (Buenos Aires), EMPAC (Troy, NY), Sonic Light (Amsterdam), Dallas Video Festival, Madison Square Garden, Whitney Museum at Philip Morris, Museum of Modern Art, Eyebeam, CELCIT (Managua), LUX2006 (Sevilla) and MTV Networks (worldwide).
