Deep Listening Band members Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster and Panaiotis have captured the fantastic acoustics of the Fort Worden Cistern, a cavernous underground watertank which possesses an amazing 45 second reverberation time producing pure, smooth reverberation which overlaps the original sound. The recording employs composer Pauline Oliveros' accordion and voice; Dempster's trombone, voice, didjeridu, conch shell and garden hose; and composer/designer Panaiotis' voice, whistling, pipes and metal pieces. Deep Listening Band

A stunning second release from the Deep Listening Band's foray into the Fort Warden Cistern in 1988. Band members are Pauline Oliveros, Stuart Dempster and Panaiotis. Guests include Thomasa Eckert, vocals, and William O. Smith, clarinet. John Cage wrote a mesostic called The Ready Made Boomerang in reaction to his first encounter with the Deep Listening CD. Consequently, the following appears in the liner notes to the Boomerang CD: "It is with continuing admiration and deep thanks that this recording is dedicated to John Cage for his loving inspiration and wholehearted support." “First it was the name of an album that came out about 20 years ago and made new music history. Deep Listening. Then it became the name of the band that recorded that album. Then it became the name of a practice, an approach to art, improvisation, exploration and, well, living, that drove that
band, a band of crazies led by Pauline Oliveros, to lower themselves into a huge underground concrete cistern in the state of Washington” (David Felton, 2008). Here, 20 years later, Oliveros, Stuart Dempster and David Gamper celebrate an anniversary of improvisation, innovation and commitment with their first ever vinyl release.

This vinyl-only document contains four sidelong tracks, one reissued and three previously unreleased. “Cannery Row” was originally available on the Troglodyte’s Delight album and captures the band in Tarpaper Cave, which Dempster recalls as “an old limestone quarry near Rosendale, New York that had lovely dripping water sounds and Valhalla-like mists.” The previously unreleased tracks were gathered from three separate live performances at the Sounds Like Now Festival,
Sound Exchange American Composers Forum, and Engine 27, a 16-channel installation of special speakers.

The audio was mastered for vinyl by James Plotkin, cut direct to metal and pressed on 200g-virgin-vinyl in a limited edition of 500. The records come packaged in a custom designed slipcover and a jacket with doublewide spines. The slipcover features two exquisite photographs and is dual-finished with a gloss front and matte back. The jacket is printed on a cardboard brown stock with the pocket flooded green and features three rich essays including: an introduction by Felton, a short history
by Dempster and information about the Expanded Instrument System (EIS) from Oliveros.

Pieces include Quarry Query, Cannery Row, After Dinner With The Trogs, among others.
