18th Annual Deep Listening Retreat (Cork, Ireland, 2008)

Is this Deep Listening Retreat connected to Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening Ltd?

Yes. The Quiet Music Ensemble Ltd. is working with Deep Listening Ltd to produce the 18th Annual Deep Listening Retreat in Cork. It will be facilitated by Pauline Oliveros, Ione, and Heloise Gold.

What does my fee include?

Accommodation in single rooms in shared apartments on June 29th, 30th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th

Dinner on June 29th, 30th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd
Lunch on June 30th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Breakfast on June 30th, July 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

When should I arrive?

You should aim to arrive early afternoon on June 29th. This will give you time to register and settle in before the welcome dinner at 6.30pm.

When does the Retreat finish?

The Retreat will finish on July 4th.

After the Retreat you may wish to attend the remaining events in the Quiet Music Festival. There will be a concert on the evening on July 4th featuring musicians from the Deep Listening community. There will be a day of performances on July 5th featuring the Quiet Music Ensemble performing premiers of new music by Alvin Lucier, David Toop, Mark Applebaum, Juraj Kojs, John Godfrey and Sarah O’Halloran. There will be a special solo concert by Pauline Oliveros. Ione’s film Dreams of the Jungfrau will be shown, and Heloise Gold will perform as a guest soloist with the Quiet Music Ensemble. On July 6th there will be public lectures with some of our guest artists.

What sort of food will be available?

All food will be vegetarian.
• Vegans should let us know in advance.
• Food allergy sufferers should inform us in advance.
Breakfast—‘continental’.
Lunch—packed lunch style and can be collected in Department of Music.
Dinner—3 courses, set menu each evening.

What venues will the Retreat take place in?

Participants will stay near the main university campus, where we will do our morning movement.
The Department of Music is off-campus. It is about 15 minutes walk from the main campus and the accommodation. Participants will be expected to walk to and from the Music Department (please note that the Department is at the top of a hill, if your mobility is restricted you may want to pay for taxis to transport you, please contact us to make arrangements).

I live in/near Cork, can I stay at home?

No. This is a full-time residential course with activities from early morning until night. Living as a community is an important part of the experience, and is vital in maintaining focus.

Is this a course for professionals/musicians only?

No. Anyone is welcome to take part.

Will I have internet access?

Participants will have access to internet in the Department of Music. There is no internet in the accommodation.

What should I bring?

• Comfortable shoes and clothing you can move in.
• A rain jacket (Irish weather is unpredictable so be prepared)
• Note book and pen
• Alarm Clock
• Toiletries
• A pillow or something comfortable so you can sit on the floor
• Slippers

Optional: As you will have access to a kitchen you may want to bring snacks or drinks.

Can I bring my instrument to the Retreat?

Participants are welcome to bring instruments. The hour of 2-3PM is set aside each afternoon for those who wish to practice. Unless it is a part of the retreat activities, no playing is allowed beyond that time.
